I saw them cutting them all down, and it was very sadmaking. I get that those flowering pears don’t last forever, so why even plant them in the first place? Oh well, hopefully the crepe myrtles will grow quickly, it looks awful without any greenery.
Poor tree planning in general resulted in Bradford Pears being used extensively in urban areas (15+ years ago.) The same thing happened on Cary Street a few years back. It’ll look sparse for a couple years till the myrtles become established, but the end result will be a huge improvement. The Westover Hills Neighborhood Assn. is going to help keep them watered, so they should do very well.
So glad they’re getting rid of the Bradford Pears. Why does everyone fall for those brittle things that don’t last more than 10 years? Bring on the Crepes. Let’s just hope they have a good landscaping crew that knows how to prune them correctly.
Mary brings up an excellent point. I know for a fact that the urban foresters have a limited schedule and resources. Who is laying out the plans for the future care of these trees?
In the near term, the Westover Hills Neighborhood Association will help care for the trees by watering and tending till they get established. Regarding future pruning, I don’t know for sure. If anyone’s interested in helping care for the trees, send me an email and I’ll connect you with the WHNA.
