New development?
A Plan of Development was submitted to the city seeking to tear down the vacant McCrory Dollar at Forest Hill and Westover Hills Blvd and build 12 small commercial/retail spaces with residential on the 2nd floor.
Ryan @ Richmond City Watch posted preliminary renderings and added that the city is waiting on a resubmittal of plans from the developer.
I’m under the impression that some of the neighborhood groups may have seen/heard this already, but it’s new (within the last 3 weeks or so) to me. I’ll be curious to see how this develops (no pun intended).

Yup. We heard about this last Summer from Kathy Graziano at our Forest Hill Neighborhood Association meeting. Kathy provides updates to the status of this (and other) projects at our monthly meetings.
If anyone wants to know more, come to our meeting TONIGHT, 7pm, Forest Hill Presbyterian Church.
I don’t know how others feel, but I’ll be glad to see that area transformed in to something useful. I think one major problem with the lot is that its only accessable from east bound Forest Hill Ave. Are there any plans in the works for better access?
-just curious :)
btw- congrats on the start up!
You’re neighbors on New Kent Ave.
Anything to get that vacant building either occupied or torn down. I kept writing Trader Joe’s telling them I’d found the “perfect Richmond location” but they just didn’t bite! Lame.
Oh, and PS: When are they going to do something about that house on the corner of Forest Hill & Jahnke that was abandoned for years, and now is in a permanent state of unfinished construction? That thing has been an eyesore for as long as I’ve lived here—5 years—and probably longer.
My only concern was how they were going to squeeze 12 spots + parking into that space. I’d hoped to make it over to the FH meeting last night, but life intervened. I’m sure one of the regulars will fill us in with any updates on this.
Caitlin, we had a conversation w/ Trader Joe’s management in 2 of the NoVA stores about coming here. They basically said “Don’t hold your breath.”
I heart the Forest Hill/Jahnke house, if only because the rate of work is so comical that it makes me feel better about my own snail’s pace.
Yeah, TJ’s asked me to stop writing them a few years back. There’s rumor that they’re coming to Short Pump, but yeah, I’m not holding my breath on that one either. And once I clicked on that link for the proposed building, woah, it’s way too much stuff for that small lot. Unless the buildings are planned to be miniature sized. I will now refer to the ever-unfinished house as the Jahnky House.
Glad to hear they’re doing something with that building, but am a bit sad to see they couldn’t be more creative with their design.
At least its encouraging the devlopment of residential AND retail.
I’d love to see a Trader Joe’s as much as a Whole Foods but Ukrops keeps them pretty well at bay.
The old building will be demolished. twelve units, two buildings, one of eight, one of four. Three story, retail ground, residential condo up, 2 story. Still stuck in planning.
ah…the Jahnky house, appropriate ideed. Definately a slow go there, but it sure does look a lot better than a year ago. I must admit, I liked the phase when the old wooden walls were exposed. I remember the stump he tried to burnout- that smoldered for days. I didn’t realize how small the lot on Forest Hill was until I passed it today. Jeepers that would be cramped. “…Where the heck is a Trader Joes?” -darn shame. The closest ones are in Norfolk and No. Va.
[...] area, a quick look around VacantRichmond.com is pretty interesting. We all know and joke about the Jahnky House, but it’s just 1 of 126 vacant properties within 1.5 miles of the Forest Hill/Westover Hills [...]
